The
bamboo instrument "Angklung" is a very interesting instrument which can
be best described as a "shaking organ". Hung in a stand, each pitch or
tone is presented by a system of two movable bamboo tubes which rattle
and clapper against the binding when the player shakes it by holding it
in the middle.
Existing in Indonesia and the Philippines, normally big groups of
players gather in an ensemble, holding at least one or two in the hand
and waiting for their time to shake it. This ensemble performance
requires a lot of practise, and sometimes even complete villages play
for each other in competitions.
This model is a smaller example of sets which can range up to systems
containing bamboo tubes up to one and a half meter long.
