The Kendang drum
|
This
double sided drum on a little stand is the main signal drum of the
Gamelan ensemble. The "Kendang" player is somehow the conductor of the
ensemble, but his beats do not provide the main rhythm, they indicate
markers for parts of the performed peace and control the tempo of the
performance.
While being placed on its stand in the center of the ensemble, the
player uses both left and right hand to slap the skin.
There are three different types of "Kendang" in use:
The two "gulan" versions where one hand uses a stick while the other
hand slaps, and the smaller "gupek" which is only beaten by hand.
